Make it a memorable first day at school

Are you worried about your son/daughter starting school? Here are some tips to make it easier for you and your child...

Many parents feel worried about how their child will cope with the new routine but its important that you don't reveal these feelings to your child.

- Try to stay positive and not make it into a big deal. Some children are nervous about strange environments but classrooms nowadays are much more child-friendly than they used to be and are very similar to nursery.

- If possible, invite a child who they like from the class over to play. It is important to make sure it is a child that your own child likes and not just the son or daughter or a friend. If you have a very lively child then there is not much point in pairing him off with a meek and mild one.

- Be confident when you say goodbye. Assure your child that the teacher will take care of him or her during the day. Turn and walk out of the door and try not to hang around too much.

- If they are finding the first few weeks a bit difficult, ask their teacher if they are allowed to take a toy so that they have something to play with at breaktimes.

- Try to avoid negative things like yelling when preparing for school, (yes, I know it's difficult!).

- Remember that this is all part of growing up. It is important that you don't look at the event as something traumatic and stressful. Its difficult but every parent has to be willing to let their child grow up and if you support it rather than fight it, things will work out for the best.
