A Kitchen on Wheels
Watch out for Scotland’s first ever Cooking Bus – a colourful kitchen on wheels teaching cooking and healthy eating skills to children, parents, teachers and community groups.
The Cooking Bus was launched, (I thought that only happened with boats?) by the Scottish Government on June 26th. Children will be able to get on board for lessons in how to cook simple healthy meals as well as essential food handling and preparation skills.
At primary and secondary schools across Scotland, session on the bus will mean children and their teachers can enjoy specially tailored classes as the bus opens out to provide a fully equipped state-of-the-art classroom and kitchen for sixteen students. It is staffed by a senior teacher, a support teacher and a driver.
During school holidays, classes will also be held for community group leaders.
The project hopes to make a lasting difference by providing schools and community groups with cooking equipment and teaching resources as well as training for adults in how to use them.
200 schools in Scotland have already requested a visit from the Cooking Bus but other schools are invited to apply. You can submit a request online at www.focusonfood.org or by phone on 01422 383 191
The Bus aims to visit all 32 local authorities by the end of 2010
