''Child Protection checks flawed''

Following comments from a former director of education that money spent on the administration of Disclosure checks would be better spent on community-based projects, SPTC's Judith Gillespie was quoted in an article in "The Herald".

Gordon Jeyes, former director of education for Stirling was involved in the response to the Dunblane shootings. He is now concerned that the new POCSA legislation might foster complacency in local approaches to child protection and give people a false sense of security.

Judith Gillespie commented: "This process is costing millions, but we are not getting value for money because it is targeted at an area which has minimal risk, while ignoring those areas with considerable risk. They have set up a huge industry to tackle areas where, as far as I know, there has never been a case of a child suffering abuse at any parent-run event at any school."
